This Mother’s Day, I want to let my mom know how much I love her! I hope you can use this song to let your mom, parent, guardian, or anyone close to you to remind them how much you love them as well.
When I was in college during a summer semester, I spent a lot of time alone on a writing kick. I was taking a songwriting course in Boston, where I went to school, and was constantly inspired. I was writing song after song — in a flow creating ideas from an image or a metaphor. It came around to mom’s birthday in August, who was back home in Chicago. I took that as a chance to write her a song as a birthday gift, and to also challenge myself with my writing. How to write with decent song form, create evocative lyrics that were still real to my experiences, make the focus on her rather than myself, how to write a love song without sounding corny or cheesy and to finish on a deadline.
As a secret I asked my dad to subtly ask her some questions about how she feels about my brothers and I, what it feels like to be our mom and how much she loves us. My dad got back to me with the general quotes he could remember, so I used those, rephrased some, fit them into the lyrics and surprised her with the song!
My mom and I are both astrology geeks who send each other screenshots of our horoscopes every morning, she is a Leo! So, I used the Lion analogy in the song. She is the most giving, generous, creative, ambitious, independent, knowledgeable, and kindest person I know. She can do anything. I was so lucky to never ever have to doubt that I was loved as a child and as an adult. She is my number one (well, tied with my dad) fan, and is literally right there with me every step of the way, emphatically and passionately supporting my solo music project, career and anything I want to do in life. She always believes in me and is the reason I am able to pursue my dreams in music. We’ve been through so much together, good and bad, and as a Leo would be, she has been the most loyal, devoted friend, mom and provider anyone could ask for.
She loves our family fiercely and would do anything for us, and her challenge is to know when not to give, as she always wants to see my brothers and I succeed and enjoy our lives with such strong loving instincts. She is someone who always finds something nice to do for someone, help out, or give someone a gift just because she saw the opportunity, and she never expects anything in return.
I have everything in my life thanks to her, she’s my best friend and soul mate in life. The closest and most important person in the world to me and I just want to show her how much I love her in return with this song in celebration of Mother’s Day. I don’t always feel like the greatest daughter, or even deserve someone as amazing as her, but at least I can tell her how I feel this way. A million thank you’s will never be enough to show her what’s in my heart. With her being a Leo, and Leo being in my birth chart as well, there’s no better way than to add some drama and sing it out to the world like the performers that Leo’s are! I love you mom!!!
P.S. Even when relationships are in a difficult place, I hope this song can encourage forgiveness, and remind us that life is too short to not love one another much as we can. So, show that love to whoever that person (or even pet cat 😋) is for you.
